Yes, when some doors close — in this case, a Food Emporium and a D’Agostino’s — others, thank heavens, open. On August 12 the metro area’s seventh Trader Joe’s began, er, trading at Third Avenue and 32nd Street, a couple of months ahead of schedule. The spiffy new store features the usual carefully curated range of groceries and produce, along with the Trader’s justly renowned snacks and frozen goods—classics like “reduced-guilt” mac ’n’ cheese, fig butter and “unexpected” cheddar, along with recent additions such as mochi ice cream and frozen organic silver-dollar pancakes (possibly the modern world’s greatest gift to a stressed parent). And it’s open every day till 10 p.m. for that moment when you’re about to continue your binge-watch of The Walking Dead and only chile spiced mango slices and mini cinnamon-sugar churros will do.
